If you read a travel blog about Hampi written before 2021, throw it out. Older guides rave about Hippie Island (Virupapur Gaddi) — the strip of backpacker cafes across the river from the main ruins. The government ruled these structures illegal and demolished the entire island. It no longer exists.
The New Hampi Layout: Two Distinct Zones
| Zone | The Vibe | Who Should Stay Here |
|---|---|---|
| Hampi Bazaar (South Bank) | The Sacred Center. You are sleeping right next to 14th-century temple ruins. Strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free zone. | History buffs who want to wake up and walk straight into the ancient ruins. |
| Sanapur Lake / Anegundi (North Bank) | The new backpacker hub. Quiet roads, boulders, rice paddies. Meat and beer available here. | Budget travelers, climbers, and people who want to explore the rural landscape by scooter. |
How to Get Around
The ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire are scattered over 4,100 hectares. You cannot walk it.
- South Bank (Ruins): Hire a local auto-rickshaw driver for the day (₹1,200 to ₹1,500). They act as informal guides and know the exact routes between the Vittala Temple and the Royal Enclosure.
- North Bank: Rent a moped (~₹400/day). The roads winding around Sanapur Lake and the boulder fields are empty, safe, and stunning at sunset.
Give yourself at least 3 days to absorb a landscape that genuinely feels like nowhere else on earth.
