Most Indians are genuinely helpful. But like any popular destination, there are opportunistic individuals who target tourists. Knowing what to watch for puts you in control.
Common Scams and How to Avoid Them
1. The Closed Monument Trick
A friendly local tells you your destination is closed, then offers to take you somewhere else — usually a shop where they get commission. Fix: Verify opening hours on official tourism websites or Google Maps.
2. Fake Tour Guides at Heritage Sites
They approach you at entrances, offer special access, then demand high fees. Fix: Only hire guides with government-issued badges.
3. Taxi Meter Broken
Driver insists on a fixed fare that is 3x the normal rate. Fix: Use app-based cabs. If using a local taxi, agree on fare before getting in.
4. Free Bracelets or Flowers
Someone ties something on your wrist then demands payment. Fix: Keep hands in pockets, say "No, thank you" firmly, and keep walking.
5. Currency Confusion
Being given old notes or incorrect change. Fix: Familiarize yourself with current ₹ notes and count change before walking away.
