Meghalaya is a state of rolling green hills, plunging waterfalls, and the wettest places on earth. It looks more like Scotland or Jurassic Park than the typical image of India. Because there are no major airports in the state, mass international tourism has not ruined it yet.

The Logistical Reality

  • How to get there: Fly into Guwahati (Assam) and hire a car or take a shared sumo (jeep) for a 3-hour drive to Shillong.
  • The Roads: A 60km drive can take three hours on winding mountain roads. Never trust Google Maps travel times here.

Start the Nongriat trek at 6 AM to avoid heat and afternoon rain. Pack trekking poles, waterproof jacket, and waterproof hiking shoes — the steps are slippery year-round.
